There once was a king of a nation, he was a great king. He had ruled over his people for several years and they were well pleased with him. However, the king could not rule all the people alone, and since he had no son to rule under him he searched the kingdom for someone to rule with him. He found a humble man of a small village who was great in truth and wisdom and appointed him as second over the kingdom. One day the people began to grumble against the king. This broke his heart and in his grief he left his throne, despite his great love for the nation. And so his second in command was to become king, however he did not want to be king. He said to the people, “should I rule over you when I am from among you?!” So they searched high and low for a new king to rule them, a king of truth and wisdom. The man second over the kingdom led the people in the absence of the king, and they grew to love him. Many approached him saying “be our king!” but he denied saying “how can I rule over a people of whom I am part of? I am not royalty!” After many months of searching they found a man to rule them. He was of position in other kingdoms, but of no great position. He was not wise with the wisdom of scholars but of age, and had the appearance of being truthful. So they went to him and asked “will you rule us?” and after much pondering he came to them and ruled over them. One day the second commander of the kingdom was speaking to the people, he was telling the people the truth of the condition of the people and the kingdom. This truth angered the new king. He began to breathe out lies against his second in command, and his anger grew towards the man. He pulled his second in command into his chambers and spoke with him saying “leave this kingdom willingly and never return, or be executed before your people!” Loving the people, and not wishing for a rebellion he left peaceably. The new king, however, wishing to cover his anger toward the man told the people “my second in command has decided to step down! His work here is finished, and wishes to serve in another palace he does not yet know! I have told my brother if he goes out, and finds no place that he may return here in peace.” The new king threw him a grand departure, and all the people came and wept at his leaving, while some rejoiced. And so the man left, with no home to go to, no security for his family, and only an old farm house to return to. What should be done to this new king? |
